Can filings predict performance?
An honest look at the research on whether tracking 13F filings leads to better investment outcomes.
Can 13F Filings Predict Performance?
This is one of the most important questions users ask. The honest answer: sometimes, partially, but not reliably enough to act on without significant caveats.
What Academic Research Says
Several academic studies have examined whether tracking 13F filings generates excess returns ("alpha"). The findings are mixed:
Potentially positive:
- High-conviction positions (top 5 holdings) of skilled managers have shown some persistence in outperformance
- "Superstar" investors with long track records may have some predictive value in their largest, most concentrated bets
- New positions initiated by multiple investors simultaneously have historically outperformed in some studies
Neutral to negative:
- Most of the alpha from mimicking 13F positions disappears after accounting for the 45-day filing lag
- Broad imitation strategies (copying all reported positions) tend to underperform due to diversification and transaction costs
- Funds that file 13Fs include many that underperform index funds
The Lag Problem
The most significant challenge with 13F-based strategies is timing. By the time a filing is public:
- The position was established 45–135 days ago
- Prices may have moved significantly
- The fund may have already reduced or exited
A study by Aragon, Martin, and Shi (2019) found that much of the abnormal return from "superstar" managers was concentrated in the period before the filing became public — meaning the edge is largely inaccessible to outside investors.
